Introduction This is responsible traffic and parking enforcement work for the City of New Haven. The role involves monitoring an assigned area to ensure compliance with parking ordinances and ticketing non‑compliant vehicles. It also includes assistance in traffic control and the enforcement of traffic laws pertaining to pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Work is performed independently according to ordinances and established policies, with supervision by an administrative supervisor. This position is a 40‑hour work week with rotating shifts that may include weekend and evening hours. Internal only – open only to current City of New Haven employees meeting minimum requirements. Typical Duties and Responsibilities Enter and retrieve vehicle registration information and status using hand‑held computers. Identify vehicles in violation of parking codes and confirm identities when necessary to determine if vehicles need to be booted or towed. Place tickets on illegally parked vehicles and summon tow trucks as required. Assist in enforcement of traffic and parking violations on assigned shifts and areas. Patrol assigned areas by vehicle or on foot to ensure compliance with parking ordinances. Arrange for illegally parked or abandoned vehicles to be towed and direct tow truck drivers. Perform traffic control work such as setting up barricades and temporary signs, placing bags on parking meters, or directing traffic. Maintain records related to assigned work and issue daily reports. Provide information to the public regarding parking regulations, facilities, and points of interest. Appear in court at hearings regarding contested traffic citations. Observe and report hazardous conditions (missing traffic signals, sign damage, street marking issues). Perform related duties as required. Education, Qualifications & Experience High‑school graduation; a minimum of six months’ customer‑service or similar public‑facing experience. Knowledge, Experience, Skills & Abilities Become familiar with city traffic laws and regulations. Assess evidence and make enforcement decisions. General computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheets, email). Assemble detailed information in written reports. Interact tactfully, firmly, and courteously with the public. Identify and report hazardous conditions. Work rotating shifts, including all weather conditions. Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards. Follow oral and written instructions. Walk for extended periods under all weather conditions. Give hand direction to pedestrians or vehicular traffic. Build effective working relationships with employees and the public. Handle high‑stress situations calmly and effectively. Necessary Special Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Must be a current employee of the City of New Haven meeting minimum requirements. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing, walking, crouching, and carrying up to 75 pounds; working in wet or humid conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and at outdoor weather conditions. The job may involve repetitive motions, exposure to fumes, and occasional lifting of heavy objects. Salary, Bargaining Unit & Terms of Employment This is a 'General Fund' tested position. It is included in a collective bargaining agreement with AFL–CIO Local 884.
