Job Description

The Team & Culture: Who We Are

The Alaska State Commission for Human Rights is a dedicated team driven by a singular, powerful vision: to see an Alaska free of discrimination. Our mission is to eliminate discrimination for all Alaskans through education and enforcement.

As a member of our team, you aren't just an employee; you are a change agent. We believe that every individual brings unique ideas and values that enrich our collective environment. Whether we are traveling to small towns to educate the public or working out of our friendly Anchorage office, we operate with a spirit of leadership and collaboration.

Why Join Us:

  • Meaningful Impact: Engage in exciting work that helps prevent discrimination across the state.
  • Work-Life Balance: 37.5-hour work week with 12 paid holidays.
  • Generous Leave: Start with approximately 21 days of personal leave annually.
  • Convenient Location: Our office at 1901 Bragaw Street (Russian Jack neighborhood) is commuter-friendly with easy highway access and nearby parks and restaurants.
  • Growth Environment: Build your office and computer skills while learning the quasi-judicial processes of the Commission.

What You Will Be Doing:

As an Administrative Assistant 1, you will provide advanced clerical and administrative support for the Commission. Your core responsibilities include:

  • Commission Support: Act as a liaison between the agency hearing unit and Hearing Commissioners; serve as Commission Secretary by coordinating quarterly meetings, setting up space, and taking minutes.
  • Investigative Assistance: Support the Investigations team by monitoring incoming complaints and managing agency case management systems, including coordination with the EEOC.
  • Office Operations: Serve as a backup for office assistant duties, including mail processing, inventory monitoring, and screening calls.
  • Logistics & Travel: Arrange all transportation, accommodations, and registrations for Commissioners and staff. You will also coordinate training materials and ensure they arrive at sites on time.
  • Field Support: Travel across Alaska 12 days per quarter to support our mission in various communities.
  • Notary Services: Serve as a notary for office-related documents (requires a limited notary certification).

Who We Are Looking For:

The ideal candidate is a highly organized professional who thrives in a diverse environment. We are looking for a team member who embodies the following:

The Organized Multi-Tasker

  • Detail-Oriented: You are thorough, conscientious, and take pride in the accuracy of your work.
  • Information Manager: You can gather, organize, and maintain complex records while determining what information is most critical.
  • Problem Solver: You use sound judgment to evaluate alternatives and make recommendations when challenges arise.

The Tech-Savvy Administrator

  • Digital Proficiency: You are comfortable using computers, databases, and automated systems to stay efficient.
  • Clerical Expert: You have a solid grasp of filing, data entry, and using templates or forms to streamline office workflows.

The People-First Communicator

  • Customer Service Champion: You enjoy working with the public and agency partners to assess their needs and provide clear assistance.
  • Interpersonal Excellence: You maintain effective relationships through courtesy, tact, and empathy.
  • Inclusive Mindset: You relate well to people from all backgrounds and are sensitive to cultural diversity, disabilities, and individual differences.
  • Composure: You remain professional and polite even when dealing with individuals who may be distressed or difficult.
Minimum Qualifications

Six months of advanced clerical experience. This experience includes work such as Office Assistant 2, Accounting Clerk, and similar classes with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer. OR Six months of any combination of post-secondary education, vocational education, and/or advanced-level clerical experience.
